Piano recitals: A time for celebration! By – Dr. Ricardo Pozenatto

At the New Tampa Piano and Pedagogy Academy students come together to share their musical accomplishments and hard work through celebratory piano recitals that happen twice a year, by the end of the Fall and Spring terms. Although a venue of entertainment for family members and friends, the piano recital can also be an important pedagogical tool that provides numerous benefits to students.

In our academy, the overall sense of excellence in the piano recital inspires all students to do their best. As we know, we all put in the best effort when looking to achieve a certain goal, and so do our piano students. To present the piano recital as a goal has much value for students’ progress. They learn how to work with long-term preparation and deadlines, recognizing that not everything can be easily granted—such as in life. They learn about resilience and how to overcome musical challenges toward a meaningful achievement. The recital preparation is instantly reflected in students' practice routines: they become more motivated to practice, more focused, and willing to practice longer to accomplish the weeks’ assignments leading up to the recital.

It can be intimidating to perform music in front of an audience. For that reason, we approach the piano recital as an exciting, appealing, and inspirational experience. Students learn how to get “comfortable being uncomfortable” while practicing the performance itself. Not only does this prevent performance anxiety but it is a skill that could also be transferred to diverse performance settings students may be presented with, such as school exams, sports games, RCM examinations, and others. Additionally, we nurture the value of healthy competition through the recitals, where students learn from one another while observing their peers’ performance growth. The piano recital is a shared experience between students, teachers, and the audience. As a participatory experience, it is an opportunity to build a sense of community among students who watch others doing the same things they do. Simultaneously, this experience teaches compassion, empathy, and vulnerability while students display hours of practice in front of an audience who encourages and cheers them through their mistakes and nerves—we are all humans, we are all susceptible to mistakes…

Lastly, being able to hear and be inspired by live music is of great value in creating remarkable memories, which is something that a piano recital offers. Friends and family involvement in recital experiences highlights the hard work students put into their studies, making sure they are noticed and valued. This could positively impact the students' commitment to learning and practicing during their musical journey.

Our upcoming Spring recital is approaching, and we would like to invite you to be part of this transformative musical experience! Save the dates, June 11th and 12th 2022.
